Cheek Reduction Surgery

To get an harmonic face is something that we want every time we look in the mirror. It's an every day dream.

Bichectomy or also known as cheek surgery is a procedure that seeks to reduce the size of the cheeks and improve the face shape removing the Bichat bags (fat pad on the face). This surgery is recommended for round face people.

A cheek reduction can be performed by removing the buccal fat pad. The buccal fat pad is a collection of tissue located under the cheek bones, containing lobules of fat. The pad can be partially removed by making an incision inside the mouth, gently teasing out the fat globules from within the mouth. It is important to realize that the buccal fat pad shrinks as we age. Too much removal of the fat pad can mean a gaunt look as we grow older, as the fat pad becomes too thin. The recovery process is in the order of a few weeks, as all the swelling and bruising settles.

The extraction of adipose bags better known as Bichat bags, allows the obtainment of adequate facial structures, allowing the cheekbones to stand out and an improved definition of the jaw line.

How Much Pain is Associated with the surgery?

Patients can experience mild to moderate pain and discomfort after undergoing buccal fat removal, which can be lessened with prescription pain medication. Some degree of swelling and possibly bruising can be expected, but this is only temporary. It is recommended that you stay home for at least a week after surgery and take it easy for the first three weeks following surgery.

After Your Procedure

This is an ambulatory procedure carried out under local or general anesthesia as well as sedation and it does not leave and visible scars. In the recovery some pain may be present which is controlled with analgesics, and a mentocervical pressure band is recommended.

After surgery, the face will be temporarily swollen and the cheeks will appear puffy. While recovering, it is important to keep the head elevated while sleeping or laying down to rest. Applying cold compresses to the face will help decrease swelling during the recovery period.
